Abstract. When attempting to do Live Partition Mobility (LPM) in your environment, use the Live Partition Mobility Preparation Checklist. The assumption for using this checklist is that you previously set up your LPM environment based on the Live Partition Mobility Setup Checklist or the IBM PowerVM Virtualization Introduction and Configuration, SG24-7940, an IBM® Redbooks® publication.

Formula for converting cc/rev to LPM. - Stuffworking.com. PowerVM can drive 100 Gigabit networks. −Size of LPAR’s memory –LPM traffic is the memory contents of an LPAR. The larger the Memory, the more that is transferred. >For example, a 500 Gigabyte LPAR needs a minimum of 7 minutes to transfer over a 10 Gigabit network. IBM created a tool that makes the use of LPM and SRR faster and easier: The IBM PowerVM LPM/SRR Automation tool.

The Advanced PowerVM Provisioning Toolkit’s capture/create/build process flow has been used by dozens of major clients looking for non-LPM based methods to migrate to new IBM Power technology. A major US bank is currently using the capture/create/build process for migration to new IBM Power Systems hardware, assisted by an IBM-created orchestrator script. Making life easier for system admins: The IBM PowerVM LPM/SRR Automation tool. If you’re a system administrator working with IBM Power Systems servers, you know that Live Partition Mobility (LPM) and Simplified Remote Restart (SRR) are essential capabilities for managing your server environment. In the normal course of maintaining your systems, you might need to move partitions because of The PowerVM LPM/SRR Automation tool allows you to take advantage of many of these features more quickly and easily through its GUI or spreadsheet support.

This week, I’m going to review the PowerVM LPM/SRR Automation tool in detail. As I wrote before, LPM is a feature of Power Systems servers that enables a virtual machine (logical partition, or LPAR) to be relocated to another system while it’s running, with no downtime.

LPM can help you: Perform scheduled hardware/firmware maintenance that requires a server outage (server evacuation) without taking applications down PowerVM, formerly known as Advanced Power Virtualization (APV), is a chargeable feature of IBM POWER5, POWER6, POWER7, POWER8, POWER9 and POWER10 servers and is required for support of micro-partitions and other advanced features. Support is provided for IBM i, AIX and Linux. LPM itself is enabled by installing PowerVM Enterprise Edition. It’s not available with PowerVM Standard Edition, however, you can upgrade from Standard to Enterprise. There are some specific terms within LPM that it is important to understand. LPM allows you to move an LPAR, complete with running applications, from one Power Systems server to another without an application outage.
